Presentación del libro "200 años de economía en el Perú"

A publication that invites us to reflect on the economic ups and downs that our country has had in 200 years of republic and the path we have ahead of us; This is how Dionisio Romero Paoletti, president of the Romero Foundation, described the book 200 years of economy in Peru – Learning from us same ones that were presented last night at the Pedro de Osma Museum in Barranco.

“The Romero Foundation’s effort lies in bringing training and educational content to as many citizens as possible; For this reason, we will donate more than 20,000 copies of this book to schools, universities, libraries, as well as allowing the PDF to be downloaded jointly from the portal called: 200 years of the economy in Peru,” he indicated.

“The philosopher Ruiz de Santayana already said it: The people who do not know their history are condemned to repeat it.” With these words, journalist Aldo Mariátegui reflected on the need for Peruvians, especially the new generations, to have a manual on the economic history of our country so as not to fall into recipes implemented in the past that have had negative results.

Mariátegui was a member of the advisory board that reviewed each chapter of the book together with the businessman Martín Pérez, the economist Diego Macera, the editor Bernardo Roca Rey and the director of this house Cecilia Valenzuela. The book was written by journalists Claudia Izaguirre and Isaac Vásquez, with the collaboration of Francisco de Piérola, Renzo Norvani and Jared Panta. The publication is a reality thanks to the Romero and Perú21 Foundation.

Readability

The intellectual and founder of Grupo Apoyo, Felipe Ortiz de Zevallos, highlighted that, unlike an economic history book written by historians and economists, which can be dense, one written by journalists has the advantage of being easy to read, more practical and entertaining.

“200 years of economy in Peru develops in just 8 or 10 pages in the format of journalistic articles quite motivating themes of our history,” he indicated.

In turn, Diego Macera, director of the Central Reserve Bank and the Peruvian Institute of Economics, commented that the book can be read like a novel and that the amazing thing is that, by reviewing each chapter, one can corroborate how our country has fallen. in ideas that have led us to the same mistakes of the past.

“What we read today in Perú21 as novelty already happened 20 years ago, 50 years ago and even 100 years ago,” he said.

Macera highlighted that, according to the work, the average commodity boom period that Peru has had is between 30 and 50 years, which means that the copper boom we have today would only be beginning. He reflected that, if the same thing happened with copper, we have many lessons to learn from what we did not do in previous booms.

Peru21 motivation

Cecilia Valenzuela, journalistic director of this publishing house, recalled that the initiative to produce the book began in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, when the future looked uncertain and, above all, the poorest and most vulnerable faced the failure of public health.
He pointed out the need to explain how the ineffectiveness of the State has prevented having an adequate health system, despite the economic growth that Peru has experienced.

“During the pandemic there were many things that the Government hid. I think that what we have seen or what we have been told officially has not been told well. And we had to try to tell it in a way that was not only lighter, but more agile so that everyone understood it,” he said.
