The general director of MiningRolando Muñoz, stated this Friday that the levels of disorganization that affected the Barahona larimar mine caused that “the security “There was danger for everyone who went.”
“The issue of securitybut it is at its minimum,” said the official, during an event held by the Ministry of Energy and Mines to commemorate National Larimar Day.
The official indicated that despite the progress to change the way of working in the mine, “the issue of securitybut it is at its minimum.”
In that sense, he indicated that this year the death of a worker in the mine, which was the scene of up to three deaths annually.
Elderly control in the operations
During his intervention, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, maintained that this entity has identified “each extraction point in the mine, in order to have a greater control of the operationswith more strategic decisions and guarantee that the job be done in an organized manner.”
Santos reported the installation of equipment technological for monitoring possible slides in the mountains, with the aim of protecting mine workers and nearby communities.
The minister highlighted the development of strategies to respect the stability of the terrain and protect the environment:
“It is a step that I consider essential to maintain the sustainability of the mine and the care of the environment“, said.
Santos reported on the improvement of the electrical system of the mine to “ensure that the operations have constant access to the energy they need.
The official emphasized the need to continue increasing the exports of larimar, which currently exceed 55,000 pounds.
Miners: we worked in a pitiful way
Manuel Miguel Cuevas and Ronaldo Guevara have been working in the mine in the southern province for more than 30 years, a job they learned from their parents.
“We worked in a very regrettable way, which was not the best,” said Cuevas.

Cuevas recalled that they previously worked in the mine without protection already open sky. “Not now, we work based on tunnels and with wood,” he said.
