Rosa Cucunuba: «If we leave our spaces empty, we are going to lose the university»

The student leader of the Seamos movement and elected vice president of the Federation of University Centers of the Central University of Venezuela highlighted that the participation in the elections on November 15 at the university was greater than expected after the current context of electoral distrust.

Rosa Cucunuba, elected vice president of the Federation of University Centers of the Central University of Venezuela (FCU-UCV) expressed that the student movement is not immune to fear of repression in the country. Even so, Cucunuba maintained that university students must defend their spaces and their rights.

“We are not exempt from feeling fear, but we understood the importance of what is at stake, if we leave our spaces empty, we will lose the university,” he added.

Cucunuba spoke with Gabriela Rojas, director of SuchWhich about the political status of the University. Cucunuba commented that participation in the university elections exceeded the figure of 10,000 voters and exceeded expectations in a context of possible distrust in the electoral processes.

On November 15, undergraduate students and graduates of the UCV elected their representatives before student centers, school and faculty councils, the university council and the board of directors of the FCU-UCV for the period 2025-2026.

The student leader of the Seamos movement commented that on the occasion of University Student Day, the community went from celebrating to commemorating the date and highlighted that despite the release of two Ucevistas, four others continue to be arbitrarily detained.

He added that the Federation’s work on political issues has been important and specified that the institution supports the students and demands their release: “They did not commit any crime, we cannot act blind and deaf,” Cucunuba said.

The law student also indicated that the members of the newly elected FCU have a commitment to the country: “We want to build a country, we are not in a fight of egos. The problems that suffocate us are much bigger than ego.”

Cucunuba reiterated the flaws that the university presents in infrastructure and budget. He denounced that the scholarship offered to students today remains at five dollars and warned about violations of university autonomy.

He explained that in the work plan of the newly elected FCU, there is work to make the university competitive and offer an adequate education. Cucunuba commented that the Academy needs debate tables, but clarified that respect and plurality must prevail in them.

Regarding the relationship between the student leadership and the authorities, the elected vice president of the FCU-UCV indicated that conversations have been held and expressed that transparency with the university’s income is a priority for the university.

“One of the main things is the issue of transparency. We are insistent on this issue, it is essential. The budget from the State is non-existent, but we must know what is done with the money and how it is distributed.”
