The La Libertad Bar Association (CALL) issued a statement through its social networks to express its deep rejection of the recent appointment of María del Carmen Olórtegui as the new representative of the Ombudsman’s Office in this region. In its statement, the lawyers’ union highlighted that this decision contravenes the principles established by the Political Constitution of Peru, considering that Olórtegui does not meet the appropriate requirements to hold a position of such magnitude.

The CALL’s main argument lies in the fact that Olórtegui, who recently resigned from his leadership position in the political party Alianza Para el Progreso (APP), still maintains ties with politics, which, according to the college, could compromise his impartiality. .
In this sense, the Bar Association considers that this resignation is not enough to guarantee its independence, especially in a position as sensitive as that of Ombudsman, whose main function is to ensure the fundamental rights of citizens.

Furthermore, the statement emphasizes that Olórtegui does not meet the appropriate professional profile for the role entrusted to him. In his opinion, the position of Ombudsman requires experience and training that ensures commitment to the defense of people’s constitutional rights, something that, according to the CALL, is not reflected in the career of the appointee.
“The appointment for such positions in their types of trust or competition responds to their qualified capacity for the position, merits due to professional experience, management or professionalization skills, suitability for the position for which they are applying and ethical behavior, among others that are deems pertinent depending on the position and specialty”, the statement reads.
