The heavy rains that hit La Guajira in recent days have caused a serious emergency in the region, with floods that have affected hundreds of families, forcing them to leave their homes and seek refuge in safe places.

However, in the midst of this crisis, an even greater tragedy has shocked the community: a child who was only one year old, who managed to survive the floods, lost his life due to malnutrition.

On November 13, a video circulated on social networks, showing a group of people walking through a stream in the direction of the Los Ciruelos community, located in Alta Guajira. In the midst of the emergency, the child’s parents carried him in their arms, trying to save his life.

The situation was critical: the minor was in a deteriorating state of health, which forced the parents to walk for more than an hour, avoiding streams and difficult terrain, until they reached a point where an ambulance was waiting to take him to a center. assistance.

“Our road has many streams, however, the child’s father did not refuse to take care of his son and so he carried him in his arms, crossing those streams to take him out to where there was road access,” declared Guillemina Epieyú, Wayú authority, in an interview with Noticias Caracol.

After spending several days in the ICU of a clinic in Riohacha, the child died

Despite the effort to save him, the child was transferred in precarious conditions to a clinic in Riohacha, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite medical efforts, the child died days later due to malnutrition.

This tragic event has generated a wave of indignation in the Wayú community, which denounces the failures in care and the lack of adequate support since the beginning of the emergency. “There were failures, I did not feel that support from the beginning,” said Guillemina.

The tragedy of this child highlights the serious situation faced by many communities in La Guajira, which, in addition to the floods, suffer from a lack of resources and timely medical care.
