IAPA renewed directive and its commitment to free expression

Jorge Canahuati was ratified as president. Gabriela Vivanco Salvador, from LA HORA newspaper, was appointed secretary of the continental media organization.

At the end of its seventy-seventh (77) General Assembly, the Inter-American Press Association (Yep) renewed part of his directive. Jorge Canahuati He will continue to preside over the body that brings together the free media of the continent until October 2022, something that the Honduran journalist and businessman thanked.

They will accompany you in the directive: Michael Greenspon (first vice president), of The New York Times, of the USA; Roberto Rock (second vice president), from La Silla Rota, from Mexico; Juan Pablo Illanes (treasurer), from El Mercurio, from Chile; and Gabriela Vivanco Salvador (secretary), from LA HORA, from Ecuador.

Additionally, the new 20 directors of the Board (composed of 60 members) and new presidents of the Finance, Press Freedom, Impunity and more commissions were elected.

During the closing speech, Jorge Canahuati emphasized the dichotomy that the media lives today and the damage caused by the pandemic.

According to Canahuati, while the media were recognized as never before by audiences and as the mainstay of democracy, Covid-19 economically weakened them and advertisers.

The president of the Yep He mentioned a data from the UN: that in 2020 there were losses of 30,000 million dollars just for newspapers, to say that companies in the sector are “in emergency.”

Likewise, the General Assembly in its conclusions used phrases such as “hostility, stigmatization, violence, arrests and death. Practicing journalism is becoming more and more dangerous in countries whose democracies are slowly deteriorating.

Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela appear in the reports of the Yep as the countries of the continent where the fundamental right to Freedom of expression it does not exist and that is why each one deserved a resolution of the 77th Assembly.

However, in most countries there are restrictions and only two out of 22 (Uruguay and Chile) reach the level of full press freedom, according to the Chaputelpec Index, which is prepared by experts from the Venezuelan University Andrés Bello for the Yep. (EUROPAPRESS-EFE)
