AMIA asks to define electromobility policy

The Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) demanded the government of Claudia Sheinbaum to define the electromobility policy and accelerate the transition agenda from combustion to new green technologies, which will be the spearhead to position Mexico in North America and the world in the next 30 years, as well as keeping it within the Top Ten of global vehicle manufacturers, but now with electric car assembly.

Odracir Barquera, general director of AMIA, specified that the Mexican automotive industry is a world leader, the seventh manufacturer of light vehicles on the planet, which is set to reach record levels of production and export, as well as sales of automobiles, in 2024. combustion mostly, electric and hybrid, and the sector that contributes the most to the generation of foreign currency and attracts investments.

“NAFTA consolidated the automotive industry and today electromobility will give Mexico a position in 30 years,” he said within the framework of the Businees Automotive Metting (BAM) 2024 meeting, organized by the Ibero-American University and the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster. Given electromobility and nearshoring, the automotive industry and Mexico have a historic opportunity for growth, similar to what NAFTA brought.

For this reason, the automotive industry handed over the decalogue of the sector to the new government, commented Odracir Barquera. “We have been talking with the new government to have a comprehensive electromobility policy. A policy that first recognizes that there are a variety of technologies (hybrid, electric and hydrogen), which is to promote the manufacturing of new vehicles and their components; Second is that we can have the conditions (energy, logistics, infrastructure and legal certainty) for the Mexican market to transit and the third is everything related to the infrastructure that will be required for the loading of the technologies that require recharging,” he pointed out.
