The Brazilian president highlighted that South Africa, which will assume the rotating presidency of the G20 after Brazil, will be the last of the 19 member countries to assume leadership of the group of nations.

“It will be an opportune moment to evaluate the role we have played so far and how we should act from now on. We have a responsibility to do better,” he said.

In his speech, Lula cited the leader of the fight against apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela, and said that it is easy to demolish and that heroes are those who build. “Let’s continue building a fair world and a sustainable planet.”

Lula also highlighted the achievements of the G20 this year, such as the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, placing climate change on the agenda of finance ministries and central banks and the creation of a coalition for local and regional production of vaccines.

“We leave the lesson that the greater the interaction between the Sherpa trails [negociações políticas] and finance, the greater and more significant are the results of our work”.
