“The mayor’s offices are responsible for managing, operating and supervising all cemeteries, public crematoria; They have to supervise, the mayors, the personnel that works in the cemeteries, as well as the control of the activities of the providers of external services”, indicated Néstor Vargas Solano during the presentation of the new regulation on February 22.
Mayors recognize problems and challenges
In the city, 82 of the 118 cemeteries are community cemeteries, that is, they are administered based on the uses and customs of the towns, original neighborhoods and communities.
Previous attempts to update the current Cemetery Regulation published in 1984 have failed during the last 38 years precisely due to the opposition of the towns and neighborhoods.
Adrián Rubalcava, mayor of Cuajimalpa, points out that one of the problems in community cemeteries has to do with perpetuities, since exhumations are carried out without informing the families.
