Trump wants his old friend Howard Lutnick to be his next Commerce Secretary

The elected president of the United States, donald trumpI would choose Howard LutnickCEO of the firm Wall Street Singeras Secretary of Commerce, according to press reports this Tuesday, to supervise the agency that has become the preferred weapon against China’s technology sector.

With Lutnick, Trump I’d be turning to an old friend which supports the Republican’s vision of returning manufacturing jobs to the United States and promoting cryptocurrency adoption.

He Department of Commerce It oversees a number of disparate functions, from regulating ocean navigation to conducting the census. But his oversight of export controls has put him at the center of the technological war between the United States and China.

He trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for Lutnick declined to comment.

Fearing that Beijing will use American technology to strengthen its military, the Trump and Joe Biden have aggressively used Commerce Department authorities to impose regulations that stem the flow of domestic and foreign technology to China, with special emphasis on semiconductors and the equipment used to make them.

Unlike other members of Trump’s inner circle, Lutnick doesn’t often talk about China. He is a great defender of tariffsespecially aimed at the Asian giant.

The next Commerce Secretary will be responsible for enforcing a series of rules put in place to hinder the development of artificial intelligence in China.

Lutnick has been one of Trump’s leading supporters on Wall Street, hosting fundraisers and promoting his policies in the media.
