USA.-Humanitarian agencies of the United Nations (UN) in Haiti have registered some 20,000 displaced people in just four days as a result of the violence that has worsened in Port-au-Prince and its surroundings.
Given the worsening of the crisis, the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) announced that it will resume operations on Wednesday thanks to a special exemption granted by the United States Federal Aviation Agency (FAA).
Humanitarian agencies indicate that the latest mass displacement includes 17,000 men, women and children who have sought refuge in 15 temporary sites.
They indicate that many of these people have experienced multiple displacements, leaving behind the little they had managed to rebuild. The FAA authorization follows the suspension of humanitarian and commercial flights in Haiti due to recent attacks on aircraft.
Some planes, including those carrying humanitarian aid, were targeted by gunfire, forcing international organizations to temporarily halt their air operations.
This disruption complicated the delivery of assistance in a country where land access is equally dangerous due to gang control in numerous areas.
With the resumption of UNHAS flights, it is hoped to facilitate the movement of essential supplies and humanitarian personnel to the most affected areas, marking a crucial step in the response to the crisis.
The IOM highlighted that the current wave of displacement in Port-au-Prince is the most significant since August last year.
Victim Difficulty
Victims of violence, many of whom have been previously displaced, face enormous difficulties in surviving. For its part, WFP has intensified its efforts to combat food insecurity in Haiti.
In recent days, it distributed food rations to more than 50,000 vulnerable people in Croix-des-Bouquets and plans to deliver food to 135,000 people in Port-au-Prince before the end of the month.
