ELN announces the end of the armed strike in Chocó, after a violent week

National Government confirms that it is resuming offensives against the ELN guerrillas

The Colombian guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN) announced that it is ending as of this Saturday the armed strike that it declared in the department of Chocó since last November 9an area seriously affected by the rains and floods last weekend.

“As of 6:00 am on November 16, 2024, we end the armed strike in the San Juan (river) subregion. We alert the inhabitants who live in the areas of greatest disturbance of public order so that they “Avoid night movements. Our activities continue in the surveillance and control of the rivers.”the guerrilla indicated in a statement.

The ELN’s announcement of the armed strike in Chocó came after a meeting between the delegations of the Government and the guerrilla in Venezuela, within the framework of the peace process that they began in 2022, and It started when heavy rains caused an emergency in the department, aggravating the situation.

This same Friday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned of the “humanitarian crisis” that the region experiences, which has 87% of its municipalities affected and has damage to crops, road closures and “mobility restrictions due to armed strike”. Regarding the announcement of the ELNthe governor of Chocó, Nubia Córdoba-Curi, assured that “This facilitates the care work for the communities that completed a week under this scourge in conjunction with the serious effects caused by the winter wave.”
