Although it has already been announced that the National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women (Conavim) will be attached to the Women’s Secretariat and no longer to the Interior Secretariat (Segob), the National Citizen Observatory of Femicide (OCNF) considers that Segob should continue to be the agency that issues Gender Violence Against Women Alerts (AVGM).
In interview with The DayMaría de la Luz Estrada, coordinator of the OCNF, pointed out that given the situation of gender aggression, it would be better for Segob to continue having that responsibility, and for the Women’s Secretariat to follow up on the AVGM.
The situation is serious, we closed the previous administration with 26 declarations of alerts in 22 states, there are more than 600 municipalities alerted. The balance is not positive, there is concern regarding the level of violence against women, which continues to be maintained and has not decreased. More than three thousand women are murdered every year. In the last five years of the previous government there were 18,469 women murdered. Furthermore, we have continued fighting so that all violent deaths are recognized and classified as feminicide.
The defender said that there are many expectations regarding the creation of the Women’s Secretariat, but also some concerns
about its scope, and now especially for the merger of Conavim to the new agency, because transversality has always been a problem on this issue.
After pointing out that it has been difficult for state and municipal authorities to fully comply with the AVGM, he indicated that with another instance having responsibility, this situation could intensify.
