Tropical Storm Sara approaches the Yucatan Peninsula: intense rains are predicted

270 kilometers from the Yucatan Peninsula, the Tropical Storm Sara It maintains its course towards the west, generating intense rains and strong winds in the region.

This Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. (central Mexico time), the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that Tropical Storm Sara was located approximately 45 kilometers west-northwest of Roatán Island, Honduras, and 270 kilometers south-southeast of Puerto Costa Maya, Quintana Roo. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h, with gusts of up to 95 km/h, and is moving towards Belize and the south of the Yucatan Peninsula at a speed of 7 km/h.

Prevention zone and heavy rains

In coordination with the United States National Hurricane Center, the SMN maintains a prevention zone for tropical storm effects from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, Quintana Roo. Sara’s cloud bands generate conditions for intense rains, of 75 to 150 millimeters, in Campeche, Chiapas and Quintana Roo, and heavy to very heavy rains, of 25 to 75 millimeters, in Tabasco and Yucatán.

Winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h and high waves of 1 to 3 meters are expected on the coasts of Quintana Roo, with the possibility of the formation of waterspouts. In Campeche and Yucatán, gusts could reach 40 to 60 km/h.

Flood risk

The rains caused by Sara could generate flooding in low-lying areas and urban areas. For this reason, the authorities urge the local population, tourists and maritime vessels to stay informed through SMN bulletins and follow the instructions of Civil Protection.

Before Sara’s approach, it is recommended:

  • Avoid outdoor activities in areas affected by rain and wind.
  • Stay away from coasts due to high waves.
  • Have an emergency plan and a basic supply kit on hand.
