During the week, several social organizations filed a complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) against the government by Javier Milei, alleging a “food crisis” and the “destruction of social policies.”
This action has generated intense debate and diverse reactions both nationally and internationally. The complaint to Government It was led by the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP), along with other organizations such as the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) and Women in Informal Employment Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO).
These organizations argue that the policies implemented by the Milei government have led to a significant increase in poverty and destitution in the country, seriously affecting the most vulnerable sectors of society.
Alejandro Gramajo, general secretary of the UTEP, expressed during the hearing that the La Libertad Avanza government represents “a plan of planned misery, a plan of social extermination and a great humanitarian crisis.” According to Gramajo, the elimination of social programs and the defunding of works in vulnerable neighborhoods have exacerbated the situation of poverty and hunger in the country.
Social organizations presented a detailed report to the IACHR, which highlights the 11% increase in poverty and more than six points in indigence during the first half of 2024. In addition, they denounced the elimination of the Social Monotax and the decoupling of the Complementary Social Wage from the increase in the Minimum Living and Mobile Wage, which has left many families without the necessary resources to cover their basic needs.
Natalia Zarza, leader of the UTEP, warned about the advance of drug trafficking in the neighborhoods most affected by poverty, a situation that, according to her, worsens when “the State withdraws and poverty grows.”
Complaint
He also mentioned that since December 2023, social organizations have not received any type of input or benefit, pointing directly against the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello.
He government Javier Milei, through the Secretary of Human Rights, Alberto Baños, and the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello, responded to the accusations in a 13-page report presented to the IACHR. In this document, the government denied the claims of social organizations and defended their policies, arguing that they have executed 82.43% of the budget allocated to food policies.
