G20 Social announces collective efforts to eradicate hunger

Led by Brazil, multilateral organizations, countries, development banks and philanthropic institutions announced, this Friday (15), the second day of debates at the Summit of G20 Socialin Rio de Janeiro, collaborative actions in the so-called Sprints 2030. The objective of the actions is to support, on a large scale, proven and evidence-based initiatives led by national governments in the fight against hunger and extreme poverty.G20 Social announces collective efforts to eradicate hunger

The agreed commitments anticipate the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative of the Brazilian government, to meet the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals of numbers 1 and 2 until 2030.

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will be made official by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday (18), during the G20 Leaders’ Summit. In 2024, the so-called Group of 20 is under Brazil’s rotating presidency. The G20 is made up of 19 important countries on the international scene and two more regional bodies: the African Union and the European Union.

The announcement of concrete actions to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty is part of the strategy called Sprints 2030, which focuses actions to obtain large-scale results in several areas such as sustainable food production, combating socioeconomic inequalities, eradicating global hunger.

Participants in the commitments of the Sprints come together until 2030:

1. reach 500 million people with income transfer programs and social protection systems in low- and lower-middle-income countries by 2030;

2. expand high-quality school meals to an additional 150 million children in countries with hunger and endemic child poverty

3. initiatives in maternal health and early childhood will aim to reach another 200 million women and children aged 0 to 6;

4. socioeconomic inclusion programs aim to reach an additional 100 million people, with a focus on women;

5. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank will offer billions in financing for countries to implement programs related to Global Alliance policies.

During the publication of Sprints 2030, the Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, Wellington Dias, stated that the announcements demonstrate the commitment of governments, international institutions and financial funds. “They demonstrate not only that they are committed and will participate, but they also reaffirm how they will participate, where they want to participate, which population they want to reach, which areas were presented as efficient proposals, based on the experience of many countries and which are the ones that each announcement want to prioritize.”

First Lady Janja da Silva said she believes that, with the announcements of Sprints 2030 made this Friday, in the coming months, more countries, institutions and, mainly, financiers will join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. “We are far from the commitments we made in the Agenda with SDGs [Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável] 1 and 2 for the eradication of poverty and zero hunger. But we still have time to act with concrete actions, in a coordinated way, taking advantage of all the experience built by different actors, around the world.”

“We will not achieve sustainable development while we leave millions of people behind, living in subhuman conditions. The Alliance’s proposal reflects President Lula’s historic commitment to confronting inequalities”, said Janja da Silva.

Partners

You Sprints 2030 brings together financial and knowledge partners to carry out joint actions. The collaborative movement has 41 national governments, 13 public international organizations and financial institutions and 19 large philanthropic institutions, civil society organizations and other non-profit entities,

The president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Ilan Goldfajn, in a video appearance, announced additional financing of US$25 billion, approximately R$140 billion, to support the implementation of national policies within the Global Alliance’s set of policies and another US$200 million or R$1.1 billion, in technical assistance for Latin American countries to develop programs and improve their actions.

“We do have the potential to end extreme poverty in Latin America by 2030. To do this, we need a collective investment of 1.6% of the region’s GDP annually. New sources of resources and innovative instruments are important for the alliance”, stated Goldfajn.

The World Bank has committed to expanding social protection programs to support at least 500 million people in developing countries by 2030 – half of this audience will be women and girls.

Regarding Brazil, Minister Wellington Dias highlighted that integrated public policies have made the country return to the path towards eradicating hunger and poverty. According to Dias, hunger in Brazil has reduced in the last two years and went from 32.8% to 18.4% of the population in moderate or severe food insecurity.

And the federal government predicts that Brazil will leave the Hunger Map by 2026, based, among other factors, on the income transfer policy of the Bolsa Família program.

Projections

Current projections indicate that 622 million people will live below the extreme poverty threshold of US$2.15 per day in 2030. If current trends continue, 582 million people will still be living in hunger in 2030, which will frustrate compliance of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

With the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which will be launched by Brazil at the G20 Heads of State Summit, this Monday, the Brazilian government wants to expand the eradication of hunger beyond the national territory to a global dimension, through strengthening international cooperation.

The larger plan to eradicate hunger focuses on pillars of support for country-led national programs, sharing of knowledge based on successful experiences and financial support.
