The tattoo market in Brazil is expected to generate around R$2.5 billion in 2024, representing growth of 15% compared to the previous year. With more than 150,000 studios operating in the country and around 30% of the Brazilian population with at least one tattoo, Brazil is among the ten most tattooed countries in the world. The data comes from the organization of the 12th edition of Tattoo Week SP, which will open this Friday (15th) and run until Sunday (17th), at Expo Center Norte.
Tattoo Week SP will occupy an area of 20 thousand square meters, with more than five thousand professionals and companies from different areas, including tattoo, body piercing and specialized products, distributed across 620 stands.
Among the international highlights of the event is Victoria Lee, a specialist in realism and recognized as the best tattoo artist in the world, alongside the famous Yeyo Tattoos studio. Tattoo Week 2024 will also bring together great Brazilian talents, such as Chico Morbene, Karlla Mendes, Bruno Moreira, Rodrigo Catuaba, Ubiratan Amorim and Debora Morrigan, among others.
According to a recent survey carried out by the German institute Dalia, approximately 38% of the world’s population has some type of tattoo. The Italians, Swedes and North Americans are at the top of the list of countries with the most tattooed people, while Brazil occupies ninth place, with 37% of the population tattooed. “The breakdown of prejudices, the appreciation of tattoos as art and the advancement of social networks have contributed to the democratization of art on the skin, consolidating this growing market”, assesses the executive director of Tattoo Week, Esther Gawendo.
Tattoo Week, in partnership with Cufa Brasilândia, offered 120 free places for tattoo and piercing courses aimed at poor young people from São Paulo’s favelas. The objective is to generate new job opportunities for participants and encourage entrepreneurship, generating income. The courses cover theory, practice and studio management and started on Monday (11) and ended this Thursday (14). Certificates of completion will be handed out at the opening of the event.
Among the attractions of the 12th Tattoo Week SP are the Miss and Mister Tattoo contest, with 28 misses and ten misters competing for the titles: Tattoo Week ALL Star’s”, an artistic battle that brings together the greatest tattoo artists in the history of the event, competing for a belt and a gold ring; and the tattoo competition, which covers 29 styles, which is open to tattoo artists from all over Brazil and abroad.
The competition will provide the opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity and talent, which will be judged by some of the most respected professionals in the sector. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the show by the reggae band Mato Seco, at the opening of the event; rap shows by Djonga, Rashid and Drik Barbosa, on Saturday (16); and CPM 22, Raimundos and Gloria, on Sunday.
