Mothers of political prisoners held a vigil in the vicinity of Yare III

A new vigil of mothers of political prisoners was held in Yare III to ask for the freedom of their loved ones; preceded by a meeting hours before with prosecutor Tarek William Saab where they were assured that they would expedite the adolescents’ cases

Mothers, relatives and friends of political prisoners who are held in the Yare III prison in the state of Miranda held a vigil from the night of Tuesday the 12th and the early hours of this Wednesday, November 13, to pray and ask for their release; day that is added to those previously carried out in Tocorón and Tocuyito.

This was reported by the count in X of the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners where those close to those detained in that detention center made banners and stood with signs of the names of those detained there to ask for a Christmas without political prisoners in the country.

María Eugenia Cadena, sister of Jaime Cadena, pointed out that the vigil lasted about 12 hours to pray for their unjustly detained relatives and ensure that everyone can be released from prison. Unlike the activity in Tocorón, the mothers wrote the word “Justice” with candles on a sports field near the prison.

Another of the mothers present said that she spent 20 days without knowing where her son was, since no one gave her an answer about his whereabouts. He said he was asking God to know where he was and why they had detained him when he wouldn’t even let them go to school alone. Additionally, as on the previous day, they prepared balloons with each person’s name to remind them that they are not alone in their arbitrary confinement.

The vigil in Yare III is evident after the NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón alerted in their social networks that they had complaints from relatives of political prisoners in that penitentiary center that their loved ones were being mistreated there; Therefore, they demanded that the authorities respect the human rights of these people who are in their custody, starting with their physical and psychological integrity.

«We remember that it is the duty of the State to guarantee dignified and humane treatment to people deprived of liberty, in accordance with international human rights laws and standards. The protection of human rights is not negotiable,” the NGO wrote.

President Nicolás Maduro denounced on the night of Monday, November 11 that there is a “campaign to raise awareness” in society about those detained after the electoral protests; and urged the Public Ministry and the Venezuelan courts to “rectify” if there is any case it should be “reviewed.”

«I call on Dr. Tarek Williams Saab, president of the Citizen Power and Attorney General of the Republic, I call on the judges of the State, if there is any case to rectify and review, also that there be justice. Justice is fair because it punishes those who must be punished and forgives when there has to be forgiveness, in case there has been some type of procedural error,” said the president.

After this, relatives indicated that the Attorney General’s Office promised to accelerate criminal proceedings against adolescents and young people who remain detained due to post-election protests.

At least 60 relatives were called to Tarek William Saab’s office who allowed them to raise some cases. Furthermore, their data was taken by prosecutors from the Public Ministry and the Fundamental Rights Prosecutor’s Office received complaints of torture and mistreatment to which some adolescents were subjected after their arrest.
