Prosecutor's Office promises to accelerate criminal cases of teenagers arrested for protests

In a meeting with relatives of teenagers detained for the post-election protests, prosecutor Tarek William Saab indicated that granting precautionary measures or agreeing to the dismissal of criminal proceedings will be evaluated.

The Attorney General’s Office promised to accelerate criminal proceedings against adolescents and young people who remain detained due to post-election protests.

This was reported by a group of relatives after a meeting with Attorney General Tarek William Saab on the afternoon of this Tuesday, November 12. At least 60 representatives were called to a meeting and received by the official in his office in Parque Carabobo, in the center of Caracas, after the ruler Nicolás Maduro requested the night before “rectify” if there were errors in arrests during post-election protests.

The mothers were allowed to raise some cases, their data was taken by prosecutors from the Public Ministry and the Fundamental Rights Prosecutor’s Office received complaints of torture and ill-treatment to which some adolescents were subjected after their arrest.

At the meeting, prosecutor Saab also revealed that granting precautionary measures or agreeing to the dismissal of criminal proceedings will be evaluated, said Dionexys García, sister of Diomer García, 17 years old and detained at the end of April in Caracas for his alleged connection to protests. .

“He spoke (prosecutor Tarek William Saab) spoke that precautionary measures or dismissal measures could be taken, so we hope that it is not just a speech, but that it becomes a reality,” he highlighted.

While Theany Urbina, mother of young Miguel Urbina, indicated that they were also promised to receive and present in court the evidence to prove their innocence in accusations such as alleged terrorism, incitement to hatred, obstruction of public roads and other crimes for which they have been accused. put several teenagers on trial in recent weeks.

«He told us that good things were coming for the boys, that they are going to go out and look for the reality of all this that we are experiencing. Before December, with the favor of God, they asked that they give freedom to all the innocent boys ( …) We hope that they are not just promises, but that they are real facts,” said Urbina.

The group of mothers also requested that these precautionary measures or releases be given before the first week of December, so that they can enjoy Christmas with their children.

On the other hand, Dionexys García described it as worrying that some minors or adults, designated as “terrorists” by the authorities, do not have a trial start date. «In the case of my brother, Diomer Gómez, today was the continuation of the trial (…) the lawyer said that the Prosecutor’s Office did not present evidence to say that my brother committed any criminal act, that is, between now and December 1 he should be released, but it is worrying that other detained minors, like adults, do not even have an opening date, they just continue waiting.

The Penal Forum, in its report on repression between the months of July, August and September of 2024, indicated that 67 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 remain detained in the country, including seven women, of the 162 who were arrested and linked to events during the protests.
