the comptroller Jorge Bermudez issued an opinion – dated February 18 – that gives 30 days to the authorities of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) to regain control of its headquarters, located in Providencia. This was taken about eight months ago by high school students and members of various organizations.
According to the slogan La Tercera PM, the opinion was issued after a consultation carried out by the UDI deputies Jorge Alessandri, William Ramirez and Juan Antonio Coloma. Specifically, they requested a statement on the takeover of the INDH and the purchase of a toilet and other accessories for more than $1.5 million.

On the first point, the Comptroller’s document indicates that “it is contradictory” that a property intended for “such transcendental work as the protection of human rights and the custody of reserved or secret documents” (such as the documents of the Valech Commission ), not “can be used by the respective body”.
In addition, Bermúdez pointed out that the occupation of the headquarters by interest groups “undermines the development of the work of promotion and protection of human rights that correspond to that service”, producing an “affectation to the members of the national community”.
In this way, he ordered the INDH authorities to adopt “immediately the measures that correspond by law to reestablish the use of the aforementioned property.” For this, he set a period of 30 days “from the receipt of this statement.”
Regarding the second point, the purchase of a WC and other accessories for more than $1.5 million, the comptroller desisted from making any comment, collects the aforementioned media.
