Jalisco seeks “Guarantee Prices” for its corn

Guadalajara, Jal. Ana Lucía Camacho, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of Jalisco, reiterated her calls for the federal government to consider the state’s corn producers in aid programs, such as subsidies for guaranteed prices. This measure , he considered, would allow the state’s producers to cover production costs and guarantee the profitability of their crops.

Currently, the price of a ton of corn is 5,300 pesos, an amount that farmers consider insufficient to cover their production costs. For this reason, they indicated that it would be desirable to take them to levels of 5,500 pesos per ton.

“Talking with corn producers they say that 5,500 pesos per ton would leave them a margin, considering that some rent land and that costs are variable,” explained the outgoing secretary. So, he said, “we hope that there can be a little support from the federal government to be able to stabilize (prices) there.”

After her participation in the Agricultural Journalism Press Tour, organized by the Mexican Association of Journalists and Directors of Agricultural Media (AMEXMA), held in the capital of Jalisco, the head of Sader assured that attention to the “corn sector” has been maintained all the time by the local government.
