City of Miami issues statement due to concern about the earthquake in Cuba

AREQUIPA, Peru – The Government of the city of Miami issued a statement this Sunday addressing citizen concerns about the possible influence in Florida of the strong earthquake that occurred in Cuba this morning.

“The City of Miami is aware that some residents in the Brickell/Downtown area may be concerned about the recent earthquake off the coast of Cuba, but we want to reassure everyone that no earthquakes or aftershocks have been noticeable in Miami,” it says. the note published in X (formerly Twitter).

In this regard, the authorities indicated that the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has not detected any seismic effects in southern Florida and has not issued any warning.

“Our Fire Department has responded to calls from concerned residents, and we want to emphasize that there is no cause for alarm,” the statement highlights.

Both the Fire Department and the Construction Department in Miami, the text adds, are closely monitoring the situation, and all security protocols are in place.

On the morning of this Sunday, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale affected several provinces in eastern Cuba, including Granma and Santiago de Cuba, according to preliminary data confirmed by the National Center for Seismological Research of Cuba (CENAIS).

The fact was confirmed by several users on social networks, where noticeable aftershocks of the earthquake were also reported this afternoon.

For his part, the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso expanded the preliminary information through a publication on Facebook.

“We confirm with CENAIS and the authorities in Santiago de Cuba. Earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale perceptible in eastern Cuba. Aftershocks are reported,” he wrote on the social network.

So far the country’s authorities have not offered further details about the possible damage in eastern Cuba, also recently affected by the passage of Hurricane Oscar.
