The latter stated that if she had decided to investigate President Luis Lacalle Pou in relation to the case of the former security chief Alejandro Astesianothe result would have been his imprisonment.
The lawyer, known for his controversial positions (such as his anti-vaccine and COVID-19 conspiracy theories), has intensified his speech against the Uruguayan judicial system. In statements to the media, he has maintained that Fossati’s actions have been insufficient and that the handling of the Astesiano case highlighted a lack of transparency and manipulation of justice to protect political figures, including the president.
Fossati was quick to refute this statement, defending his professional actions in this scandalous case that led to Astesiano being convicted and the dismantling of a large fake passport sales structure that the former presidential custodian articulated from the Executive Tower.
In her official X account, the former prosecutor argued that Salle’s comments are nothing more than irony coming from someone who, according to her, has engaged in nepotism practices. “Listening to someone who placed his daughter in Deputies, harming another with more rights, who shouted against the system and exercises nepotism, is a compliment.”, he wrote, showing his displeasure at the accusations.
Fossati defends his role as prosecutor
Fossati has also responded to accusations that accuse her of acting as “prosecutor and lawyer at the same time”. In this regard, he stated that his role is not to accuse, but to be objective and defend the rule of law. His comment seeks to clarify misunderstandings about the role he played in investigations related to the president, which have become a topic of public debate in Uruguay.
For his part, Gustavo Salle continues to insist that The former prosecutor should have deepened her investigation into Lacalle Pou. According to him, the lack of judicial action was due to fears that, if investigated rigorously, the president would have faced legal consequences. He assures that the judicial process involving Astesiano was full of irregularities that justify his criticism of the former prosecutor.
The Frente Amplio candidate, Yamandú Orsi, has proclaimed his intention to include all parties in the discussion, recognizing the relevance of the new political formation led by Salle. This approach seeks to create an environment of dialogue, although Salle himself indicates that he has not had direct contact with the presidential candidates, which complicates the communication flow between the parties.
