Ambassador Ken Salazar highlights the strength of the trade relationship between Mexico and the US

Monterrey, NL. Given the concern that exists in the business sector regarding what What will happen with the T-MEC and if tariffs will be imposed, due to the statements made during the campaign by the president-elect of the United States, donald trump; Ambassador Ken Salazar recalled that there is a treaty in force for the next 16 years, which will be reviewed in 2026 to see what can be improved.

In a press conference, the United States ambassador to Mexico He said that after the democratic election held on November 5 in their country, they are now in a peaceful transition period with the next president.

“In relation to T-MEC and the tariffs, what I spoke with businessmen is that the T-MEC has a law that was approved by three nations that will be in force until 2036, which will have a review (in July) 2026, where it will be necessary to see what things can be improve”.

“(Trump’s) campaign rhetoric can be worrying, and knowledge should be given to what has been done so well. The Nuevo León and Texas supply chains are better integrated than at any time. Currently the vision is the same, the integration of North America,” said the diplomat.

He was emphatic when mentioning that in the administration of Joe Biden“the vision is the same, the North American integration to create the strongest region in the world with more prosperity and job creation. Respect, with respect you pay.”

Security: the biggest challenge

When they asked Ken Salazar on the topic of migration and if security exchange should continue to be strengthened, he responded: “Security is the biggest challenge that Mexico has. President Claudia Sheinbaum and her team recognize how to achieve better security.”

The ambassador highlighted the leadership of President Claudia Sheibaum and Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, when they were in the administration of the country’s capital, when 13% was dedicated to security, training and intelligence; and she wants to replicate this model throughout the country.

In that sense, he considered the role of the states relevant: “I learned about what Fuerza Civil was doing in Nuevo León, an agreement with the private initiative, both invested when there was violence in 2012, it is a model that is important to be known in other cities. In a meeting with García Harfuch he said that they were going to work on it.”

In summary, he commented that the role of the United States is to support Mexico to improve security, with respect to the country’s sovereignty.

The fact, he said, is that looking forward the relations between both countries are strong and transcend, since Mexico is the main trading partner of the United States“and that cannot be done backwards.”

“Entrepreneurs in Nuevo Leon They are strong, they are not going to let it happen because the most important arteries for international trade pass through here. We must work to create a modern and secure border.” And the success that we have had must be recognized.

At the press conference, the ambassador was accompanied by Melisa Bishop, consul of the United States Embassy in Monterrey, as well as by the general secretary of the government, Javier Navarro, and by the person in charge of the office of the Ministry of Economy, Emmanuel Loo.
