The leader of the world’s leading power will arrive in our country just two months after leaving office and will subsequently travel to Brazil to attend the G20 summit, which will take place on November 18 and 19.

Biden, who took office in January 2021, had already shown an approach towards Peru last year. In November, during the Summit of the Alliance for Economic Prosperity in the Americas (APEP), he spoke with the president Dina Boluarte on topics such as migration and the fight against drug trafficking.

After this informal meeting, as it was not on the president’s agenda, both walked together towards the White House auditorium where the summit took place and where the other heads of state and delegations were present.

Meanwhile, the American first lady, Jill Bidenis no stranger to our country, since in 2016 she visited Peru as part of a tour to promote women’s empowerment, when her husband served as vice president of the United States.

VALUE OF THE REGION

Joe Bidenwho resigned his candidacy for re-election in July of this year and supported Vice President Kamala Harris, has expressed on several occasions his intention to strengthen relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the APEP Summit, Biden stressed the need to harness the economic potential of the American continent to make the Western Hemisphere “the most economically competitive region in the world.”

“We want our closest neighbors to know that they can choose between debt trap diplomacy and transparent, high-quality approaches to infrastructure and interdevelopment,” he commented at the meeting. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of building a safe, prosperous and democratic region.

Along these lines, Biden assured that the United States would make significant investments to boost infrastructure in the region and would work together to stabilize migrant populations, which included ensuring that communities that receive immigrants and refugees can accommodate them.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COUNTRY

The arrival of Joe Biden represents a relevant announcement within the framework of APEC, although it is not the first time that a US president visits Peru. In 2016, Barack Obama was in Lima for the XXVIII APEC Summit, where he met with Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and gave a speech to young people.

Other US presidents who have also visited the country include George Bush, Richard Nixon and Herbert C. Hoover.

For Peru, USA is a fundamental business partner. The institutional director of the Lima Chamber of Commerce, Carlos Posadahighlighted that the bilateral relationship has been crucial to diversify Peruvian exports.

“Strengthening this relationship is vital, since, in a challenging global context, having a reliable partner with high purchasing power like the United States provides us with stability and predictability,” said Posada.

Likewise, he emphasized that Joe Biden’s participation in APEC is an example of the United States’ economic commitment to Latin America.

“Joe Biden’s presence underlines the importance that the United States attaches to economic cooperation in our region, something key in a context of reconfiguration of supply chains and growing competition between powers,” he concluded.
