P20 Summit debates sustainability and tackling inequalities

Parliamentarians from the countries that make up the G20 participate, in Brasília, in the P20 meetings, which brings together leaders of parliaments from the largest economies in the world. The 10th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments of the G20 opened this Thursday morning (7) with representatives from parliaments of the 19 largest economies in the world, plus the European Union and the African Union.P20 Summit debates sustainability and tackling inequalities

With the theme “Parliaments for a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet”, the objective of the meeting is to identify strategies to positively impact the lives of the populations of their countries and the international community. The P20 meetings are held annually, before the G20 meeting, which brings together the heads of state and government of the world’s largest economies.

In his opening speech, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), said that it is not possible to discuss the fight against hunger and tackling inequalities without seeking solutions for sustainable development, energy transition and climate change.

“Parliament must have a true commitment to implementing sustainable development goals and promoting equality. We can no longer accept that millions of people survive miserably, excluded from social welfare. It is necessary to ensure equal opportunities for everyone.”

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), called for efforts from participants in the peace negotiations to reduce humanitarian and migratory crises and highlighted the importance of dialogue for the renewal of global governance.

“As representatives of their people, parliaments must increase their mobilization around international agreements aimed at peace, greater balance in commercial relations, food security, scientific and technological cooperation, environmental sustainability and prosperity for all. In this sense, the renewal of multilateralism proposed by the Pact for the Future, adopted in September at the UN, will only be achieved if there is great involvement of parliaments in the construction of proposals that remodel global governance”, said Lira.

The president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the P20, Tulia Ackson, who also presides over the Parliament of Tanzania, recalled that countries are increasingly distant from being able to achieve the sustainable development planned for 2030, according to the United Nations (UN).

“As parliamentarians we are in a unique position to be champions of prevention, mitigation and action. We can translate these international commitments into national realities. So that our governments are held accountable in terms of policies and programs that reflect the needs of our citizens on our planet”, said the parliamentarian.

At the end of the P20 meeting, it is planned to adopt a Joint Declaration, which will be delivered to the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for November 18th and 19th, in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of the leaders of the 19 countries- members, the African Union and the European Union.

On Wednesday (6), during the G20 Parliamentary Forum, the women’s benches of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies delivered a document called Carta de Alagoas, with recommendations from the 1st Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the P20, held in July in Maceió.

Among the recommendations are measures such as including women’s rights in the policies and public budgets of G20 countries, expanding public financing to promote equality; denounce political violence, with suggestions for actions to combat this practice; and adopt measures that value women’s unpaid care and domestic work.

The G20 Parliamentary Forum is a preparatory event for the 10th P20 Summit.
