Juan Becerra Acosta: United States, red dawn

t

start in the Yesterday morning, in Washington, journalist Mario Ávila Roque, a few minutes after Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential elections was announced, told me: We have a red dawn. We share coverage of the election day in which, although the information that came with the results was not surprising, it was disheartening for many, mainly outside the American Union where the government of this country has always had its eyes fixed greater detail than in its own territory.

The results, unlike what happens in Mexico, were announced by the media and not by an electoral authority. In the United States, no one stops the media, they are very powerful. Washington was armored by police, the Secret Service and military personnel. There were fears of riots incited by Trump if he lost the election. The Republican warned, threatening in his own style, that he would not recognize defeat. There was concern about the possibility of a second version of the storming of the Capitol that occurred on January 6, 2021. But the chances of that happening were low, not for anything else but because Trump, it was known, would reach 270 electoral votes to be winner. Kamala Harris lost not because the American majority came out to vote for Trump’s proposals, but because they came out to vote against the Democratic Party.

Donald Trump had four years to run a campaign in which he spoke to the same people he convinced in 2016, but he was also listened to by others who do not necessarily believe that his proposals will solve the problems, and he was listened to because Kamala Harris did not even propose that there are problems to solve. He evaded and the Republican took the opportunity to continue his strategy of exploiting resentments with false news and promises while offering voters become great again.

Harris had only three months of campaigning and, although she knew about the complications that such a short period entails, she did not take advantage of the time to speak to a population that does not feel seen or heard by the government of which she has been vice president. He did not acknowledge receipt of the war conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, nor clearly on the migrant issue or inflation, nor on the tension in relations with Russia and China. But Harris’ biggest mistake seems to have been not distancing herself from Joe Biden.

Is there anything you would have done differently than Biden? The Democratic candidate was asked in an interview. I can’t think of anything […] I have been part of most of the decisions that have had an impacthe responded. That statement opened the door for Donald Trump to use the same shrapnel against Kamala Harris that he had obtained to attack Biden.

In the United States, at least four in 10 working-class whites claim to live worse than their parents. That american dream and pride of a nation, was founded on the spending capacity of people to whom the american way of life It turned more than citizens into consumers. Donald Trump’s speech, racist and demagogue, includes the promise of recovering jobs for Americans while dividing by imposing enmities as a result of fears and rejections instilled against those he describes as being different due to race, nationality, ideology or position. policy.

The smell of burning gunpowder exacerbates what many Americans conceive as patriotism; they are willing to kill or be killed to defend a country that, in their way of naming it, robs an entire continent of its name, America. There is a hatred rooted in the history of the conquest of the territory that today is called the United States. This hatred identifies people who live in rural areas, white populations that feel threatened by the arrival of Mexicans, Latinos, Orientals or African Americans.

Trump is the voice of those who hid their hate speeches due to a social gag called the politically correct. It defends prejudices and justifies aversions, creates enemies and sculpts subjects of repudiation to manipulate. It is the spark that lights millions of bonfires that have been waiting for hate as fuel and power as wind to fan flames.

Donald Trump does not wake up a deep america because she was never asleep. He represents her, summons her by making her believe that, like her, he is against the status quo, when the reality is that Trump himself is the status quo. The United States, a nation in which progressive rights are abolished, such as a woman’s determination to decide about her own body, while retrograde rights are protected to provide weapons to citizens, could not be better represented than by Donald Trump, its president. number 47.
