Face to face

Recently the Cruceño Institute of Statistics (ICE) published a document on the eating habits of Cruceños, work that was done in the 15 provinces of the department and in the 4 health networks of the city. He showed what we already knew, that in Santa Cruz we love carbohydrates, it is not for nothing that 80% of the working population consumes rice and potatoes, followed by beef, chicken and pork (79%), as well as bread (73% ).

Similar results were obtained in children, which is not surprising because they consume what they see their parents eating. Added to this is that the head of the Headquarters Nutrition Program recalled that in 2000 the Ministry of Health carried out a nutritional evaluation on schoolchildren and found that 45% of the children were overweight and obese.in our department. And that in 2022 the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)did a study on schoolchildren in urban areas and detecteda worse figure, that 60% were overweight and obese.

Eating at home is the best option, but it is not always possible. Daily life pushes both parents to go out to work and those who are left in charge of the families’ nutrition are the street pensions. Are we from Santa Cruz eating well? Apparently not.
