Managua Mayor's Office announces new detour on the Juan Pablo II Highway: Closure will affect traffic lights in El Dorado and El Paraisito

The Mayor’s Office of Managua, through social networks, announced a new detour caused by the expansion of the Juan Pablo II Track, recently renamed the Heroes of the Insurrection Track.

The affected sector on that main artery on this occasion covers from the El Dorado traffic lights to the El Paraisito bridge, where it will join with the closure that the commune maintains to the El Edén bridge.

The closure of this new section is effective from November 6, according to the commune, due to the “expansion of the work area in the main artery of our city.”

The Managua Mayor’s Office specified that during this period they will be carrying out excavation activities, so “vehicular access will be restricted.”

In addition, they released maps of the areas through which the public transportation that usually travels through this section that will now be closed will circulate. Some of the affected routes are 105, 114, 120, 006, 195 and 118.

The expansion of the Juan Pablo II Runway began in August 2023. It is divided into a four-section project, but so far only progress has been made on sections one and four.

The closure of the lane between the El Dorado traffic lights and the El Paraisito bridge is precisely part of the expansion project in section four, located from the traffic lights in the El Riguero neighborhood to the La Robelo traffic lights, on Carretera Norte, which, according to the capital commune, so far has an advance of 28 percent.

Section one, according to the general secretary of the Managua Mayor’s Office, Fidel Moreno, is 50 percent complete so far. This section is located from the El Periodista roundabout to 7 South.

The cost of the Juan Pablo II Highway expansion project is estimated at more than 200 million dollars and includes four sections that cover 9.6 kilometers of road. With the expansion, this road is expected to be divided into sections of between eight and ten lanes, with five overpasses, bicycle lanes and exclusive lanes for public transportation. The Managua commune expects it to be completed within three years.
