MIAMI, United States. – The three Cuban-American congressmen from South Florida were re-elected this Tuesday to represent the state in Washington DC. In this way, Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar and Carlos Giménez will maintain their seats in districts 26, 27 and 28, respectively.
In District 26, Mario Díaz-Balart won a resounding victory by receiving 71% of the vote, beating Democratic candidate Joey Atkins, who reached 29%. With 87.9% of the precincts counted, Díaz-Balart, a member of Congress since 2002, reaffirmed his leadership in South Florida.
“Thank you, District 26,” wrote Díaz-Balart on social network X. “I am humbled by the overwhelming support. “I will continue to fight for our military, lower taxes, reduce unnecessary spending, defend American family values, and end socialist policies.”
María Elvira Salazar, representative of District 27, also secured her re-election by obtaining 60% of the votes compared to 40% for Democrat Lucía Báez-Geller. Salazar and has solid support from the Cuban-American electorate in Miami-Dade.
“Thank you to the voters of Florida’s 27th District for sending me to DC for a third term. I will continue to be your voice and fight for you! “We have a lot of work to do: fix the economy, reform immigration and fight socialism at home and abroad,” said the former Cuban-American journalist in your X social network account.
For his part, Carlos Giménez, former mayor of Miami-Dade County and representative of District 28, retained his seat with 65% of the votes, defeating Democrat Phil Ehr, who obtained 35%.
“It is an honor to have been re-elected with more than 65% of the votes! Thank you Miami and the Florida Keys!” Gimenez wrote after knowing his victory.
On the other hand, Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott also achieved his re-election, defeating Democratic candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, with 54% of the votes.
Scott, who was governor of Florida for two terms, from 2011 to 2019, was elected senator in 2018. This year he was playing his second term in the Upper House of Congress.
In addition to being a harsh critic of the policies of the current president, Democrat Joe Biden, Scott has been a strong opponent of the regimes of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
“Thank you, Florida! I am honored to serve as your senator for another six years! Tomorrow we begin the fight to make Washington work again!” wrote Scott on the social network X.
