More than 13 million people use security tools on gov.br accounts

The Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI) reported that the use of Two-Step Verification, called 2FA, in gov.br accounts grew 65% between January and October 2024. According to a survey by the department, approximately 13 6 million people use the tool, compared to 8.2 million in January. More than 13 million people use security tools on gov.br accounts

The security tool prevents scams and fraud when accessing the federal government’s digital account, which offers 4,300 services and has 162 million users. Since February, the use of double verification has become simpler by generating an access code whenever a new authentication is necessary. As a result, the sending of “push” notifications to users who already have verification enabled in the application has been eliminated.

In terms of security, the platform also has a function (Device Management) that allows citizens to choose which device can access their account and notifies them when a new device tries to log in. Another mechanism sends email to the user when an account level changes. The accounts have bronze, silver and gold levels, the last two of which have more security tools and require facial recognition.

How to access Gov.br

The first step is to download the gov.br app. After opening it, enter your CPF and click “continue” to create or change your account. On first access, you must register. Citizens fill out a simple form and their data can be validated at the Federal Revenue or INSS. However, this form only allows for the bronze level. The tool already automatically offers the option to increase your account level.

To advance to the Silver level, citizens must perform facial biometrics with their CNH, be a federal public servant, or log in through the bank, if the financial institution is one of the 14 accredited ones (Banco do Brasil, Banrisul, Bradesco, Banco de Brasília , Caixa Econômica, Sicoob, Santander, Itaú, Agibank, Sicredi, Mercantil do Brasil and PicPay/Original, BTG Pactual and Nubank).

To have maximum security, you need to have a Gold account. For this level, facial recognition must be carried out based on data from the Electoral Court or using the QR Code on the National Identity Card (CIN) or, using a digital certificate compatible with ICP-Brazil.
