Unlike many Western democracies, in the United States the president is not directly elected by the vote of the citizens.
The election process is carried out through the so-called Electoral College, a body made up of a total of 538 voters coming from all states, plus Washington DC
The number of electors corresponding to each state is calculated in proportion to its population and the number of congressmen who represent it (both in the House of Representatives and the Senate).
In 48 states and the District of Columbia, the candidate win more votes, win your delegates.
Maine and Nebraska they divide their votes: they grant two delegates to the candidate who wins the popular vote and the rest are distributed by the districts into which each state is divided and that gives him seats in Congress.
