A fire of considerable magnitude broke out on the night of Sunday, November 3, in the old Los Tucusitos park, located on 5 de Julio Boulevard in Barcelona, affecting at least 60 commercial premises.
The mayor of the Simón Bolívar municipality reported that firefighters used more than 45 thousand liters of water to control the fire. Fortunately, another 60 positions were not reached by the flames, as reported through the Instagram account.
The Fire Department’s investigation department is working hard to determine the causes of the fire.
As a safety measure, temporary closures have been implemented on nearby access roads. Ykser Orozco, head of the citizen security cabinet, announced that Carrera 7 and Carrera 8, on the sides of the market, as well as the section of the boulevard in front of the park, will remain closed. Zamora and La Chica streets, along with the rest of the boulevard, will continue to operate normally.
Orozco urged the community, especially affected merchants, to stay away while specialized teams carry out the necessary technical inspections.
“We ask everyone to remain attentive to our calls,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of this evaluation phase.
To support traders during the temporary closure of the market, the city council has launched a contingency plan, with the aim of relocating workers to safe spaces. “We are not going to neglect the right to work,” said Orozco.
No injuries were reported from the fire in the park that was taken over by improvised stores where everything from fast food to clothing and footwear was offered for sale.
The market is within the historic center of Barcelona, but because it is surrounded by Asian wholesale warehouses and some homes, although their alarms went off, it was not necessary to evacuate.
During the event, some of the owners of the affected businesses arrived, who tried to save some of the merchandise.
