Supreme Prosecutor Delia Espinoza takes office as Prosecutor of the Nation, on Friday, November 8

The titular supreme prosecutor Delia Espinoza Valenzuela will assume the office of the Nation’s Prosecutor, in a special ceremony to be held this Friday, November 8, 2024, sources from the Public Ministry revealed.

The Board of Supreme Prosecutors elected Dr. Espinoza Valenzuela as the titular prosecutor of the Nation on October 18for a period of three years that will end in November 2027.

Delia Espinoza will replace the interim Attorney General in office, Juan Carlos Villena Campana. The ownership of the National Prosecutor’s Office had been vacant since December 2023, after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Supreme Prosecutor Patricia Benavides Vargas.

Dr. Espinoza was in charge of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Crimes Committed by Public Officials and as such, she was in charge of the investigation into alleged acts of corruption against Benavides Vargas.

According to our sources, the main authorities of the country have been invited to the ceremony, which will take place on the 11th floor of the Public Ministry, starting at 10:00 in the morning.

There is a desire by Congress to control the decisions of the Public Ministry in complex investigations against organized crime and corrupt politicians.

A complicated future

Supreme Prosecutor Delia Espinoza will assume leadership of the Public Ministry at a critical time for the institution and administration of justice in Peru.

The parliamentary groups that run Congress want to control criminal investigations, especially those that follow criminal organizations, and They promote a complaint against the four titular supreme prosecutorsin search of a new Board of Supreme Prosecutors and a prosecutor of the Nation related to their interests.

In addition, recent laws that transfer the investigation of the crime to the National Police and others that disturb the development of ongoing investigations against organized crime, illegal mining and political corruption.

In such a way that Dr. Delia Espinoza will have to face external and internal political forces, while working to consolidate independent prosecutorial work in the prosecution of crime.
