Church demands "lasting peace" to the government; Catholics march in Chiapas

“Our call, our demand is unanimous: We want peace. A peace that emerges from the depths, that is solid, lasting, that arises from a strategy that faces the main social problems that we are experiencing today, that rebuilds a broken social fabric and that recovers the value of human dignity that is today has lost,” he mentioned in the weekly Desde la fe.

In his editorial titled “We want an authentic and lasting peace,” he warned that his call is to build a peace that arises from dialogue and listening, that eliminates polarization and in which laws are legislated that advocate for the defense of life.

The Church highlighted that the bishops of Mexico recognize the work of all pastors who build bridges of dialogue in the midst of conflict, who defend human dignity in every place where it is threatened, who promote reconciliation in contexts of division, who raise their voices for those who have been silenced and who accompany and console the communities victims of violence.

“Let us ask Jesus, Prince of Peace, to bring peace and reconciliation to our beloved Mexico, to instill tranquility in all hearts and to offer the consolation of his love to everyone who suffers and cries today because of the violence spread by our country,” he highlighted.

Pilgrimage and offering for peace

This weekend, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, where Father Marcelo Pérez was murdered, Catholics made a pilgrimage and an offering to ask for peace and tranquility in the state.

Among banners and flags that read “Peace” and “We continue pilgriming until justice and peace are found,” the Catholics left from three different points: Comitán, Cuxtitali square – where the priest was murdered – and Tuxtla to reach the central square of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

The father of the priest murdered 15 days ago, Miguel Pérez Sántiz, participated in the pilgrimage and said: “My heart hurts a lot. I’m very sad. He is my son.” His brothers were also there, who carried a portrait of Father Marcelo Pérez.

Added to this is the offering they made in memory of the murdered father when he got into his car after offering a mass on October 20.

“We come to tell the citizens that Marcelo is still alive and to the municipal, state and federal authorities that we are not happy or convinced that the alleged perpetrator who was detained is responsible, because he does not match the person seen in a video,” one of the inhabitants of this municipality
