Venezuela could have another chance: Brics will examine membership applications in 2025

Venezuela was left out of the Brics. The news broke on October 24. That day, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said that there is a “rule” in the BRICS partner countries and that is that the entry of any other nation will depend on everyone’s consensus for its acceptance. The Brazilian government said it vetoed Nicolás Maduro’s government because he “abused” its trust

The BRICS group will examine applications for full membership from interested countries next year. This was reported by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov.

«Several countries wish to be full members. “This issue will be analyzed over the next year,” the official said on November 2. In an interview with the channel TVBrics The diplomat indicated that the number of States interested in being part of this organization in the activities it carries out has exceeded 30.

What the official said could indicate that Venezuela, a country that was left out of the group this year, could have a second chance next year.

Lavrov noted that 13 nations have the support of the bloc’s members as potential partners and received the relevant invitations. The foreign minister of that country recalled that at the last BRICS Summit, held in Kazan, the new category of partner countries was approved, and added that in 2023 the number of member states will be increased from five to 10.

«In this sense, the Russian presidency of the group has achieved a lot. The work was as a team. Mutual understanding was reached on almost all major issues. The adopted Declaration was carried out on the basis of a balance of interests,” he highlighted.

According to Lavrov, one of the main political achievements of the 16th BRICS Summit was the demand to respect the principles of the UN Charter in relation to the Ukrainian crisis. He said that the West prefers to talk about Ukraine by mentioning only the principle of territorial integrity, as if there were no other principles in the UN Charter.

He argued that there is also the principle of self-determination of peoples and the requirement for all UN members to respect human rights regardless of race, sex, language and religion.

On January 1, Russia assumed the rotating presidency of the Brics group for 2024, a year that began with the admission of new members. The bloc, initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, was expanded with the entry of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran.

Venezuela was left out of the Brics. The news broke on October 24. That day, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said that there is a “rule” in the BRICS partner countries and that is that the entry of any other nation will depend on everyone’s consensus for its acceptance.

In that sense, Putin asserted that the positions of Brazil and Russia on the Venezuela issue do not coincide, after indicating that he spoke with his counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, by telephone about it. He hopes that Lula and Maduro can overcome their differences so that the country’s entry into the Brics bloc is crystallized.

The government of Nicolás Maduro, meanwhile, criticized the Brazilian president. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry stated that Brazil’s veto reflects “hatred, exclusion and intolerance”, preventing access to the Brics group for now.
