Former President Ernesto Zedillo affirmed yesterday that President Claudia Sheinbaum has redoubled its support for AMLO’s antidemocratic planand appears committed to following her predecessor’s goal of reverting Mexico to a one-party autocracy.

In an article published in the American newspaper The Washington Post, Zedillo criticized the president’s support for the judicial reform promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and accused her of fueling a constitutional crisis.

The former president argues that López Obrador’s reforms are designed to centralize power, weaken Mexican democratic institutions, particularly the Judiciary, and electoral bodies, and to move towards a single-party regime.

He points out that the changes promoted by the Morena governments give a greater role to the armed forces in the civil administration, which according to him can make them a key actor in maintaining an authoritarian and corrupt system.

Unfortunately, Sheinbaum has redoubled his support for AMLO’s anti-democratic plan, even emulating his tactics of slandering, insulting and threatening both the Judiciary as an institution and individual judges, as well as others who have criticized the amendments. He is also advocating for the government to ignore court rulingshe maintains.
