Save! So you can save up to 18,000 pesos in a year

Profeco made a series of recommendations so you can save money little by little and make this a habit

According to the National Financial Inclusion Survey (ENIF) 2021, in Mexico only 52% of the population has some type of savings.

Of this universe, 58% save informally, mainly by keeping money at home, participating in batches and also in savings accounts at work or with people they know. With everything and the risks that this may entail.

Take advantage of the “ant savings”

Start saving the coins or bills that you have left over from your daily expenses. You can place them in a jar, jar, piggy bank or other container. This “ant” savings technique can help you accumulate a good amount over time.

Steps to start saving

If you are part of the universe of Mexicans who do not have the saving habit and you always find loose change at home, this method is for you!

  • Choose a place for your savings: Define a container where you will deposit your money. It can be a jar or the place where you normally leave your coins when you get home. Since it is a simple method, it will not be difficult for you.
  • Set a denomination to save: Decide whether you are going to keep $5, $10, or $20 coins, or $20, $50, or $100 bills. Choose according to how much you can set aside on each occasion.

7 Recommendations to make saving a habit

1. Set a clear goal: You can commit to filling the jar, saving on certain days of the week, or during a specific period.

2. Activate reminders on your cell phone: Set an alarm to remind you to empty your pockets or purse and put away any coins you have.

3. Label your savings jar: Place a note in the jar with your savings goal, whether it’s a gift, clothing, a trip, or a special outing.

4. Adjust your consumption habits: Consider reducing expenses, such as your daily coffee, and put that money into your savings.

4. Consider a savings account: You can also invest in CETES or your Afore to ensure that your money maintains its value.

6. Don’t be discouraged and persevere: If you’ve already started, don’t empty the jar prematurely! You will feel satisfied when you see how much you managed to save.

7. Make saving a habit: This practice will give you greater control over your money and will help you improve your personal finance.
