American actor and director Sean Penn is in Kiev filming a documentary about the Russian invasion, informed the Presidency of Ukraine this Thursday.
The two-time Oscar winner was photographed andn a press conference and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a video on the Ukrainian leader’s Instagram account.
“The director came to Kiev specifically to record what is happening in Ukraine as a documentalist, and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country.”says a post on the Facebook page of the Ukrainian presidency.
“Today Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine while in Ukraine. Our country is grateful to you for your display of courage and honesty,” the message read.
The text adds that Penn demonstrated the courage that “many others, especially Western politicians, lack“.
Penn, who visited Ukraine and met with military personnel in November, spoke with journalists and soldiers and “saw how we defend our country,” the text added.
The 61-year-old movie star is working on the documentary for Vice Studios, according to NBC News.
Neither Vice nor representatives for Penn have so far responded to AFP requests for comment.
Penn’s visit comes as Russian troops advance into Ukraine, where they attack from the ground and from the air.
The actor caused controversy in 2015 by leading a controversial interviewalongside Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo, with Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmánwho was on the run.
In 2018, Penn was reported to be in Turkey filming a documentary about the murderer of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The American also visited the late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, whom he called a “friend.”
