The executive director of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (Intrant), Milton Morrison, announced that before the end of 2024, the equal payment for driver’s licenses for adults over 65 years of age would be formally eliminated.
“In the next few days we will meet here at INTRANT and the Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascención has already been informed,” the official said.
He said that the measure that was previously announced by President Luis Abinader responds to the president’s need to correct norms that affect the different sectors that make up Dominican society.
“This is a Government that takes older adults into account, and we from he INTRANT “We are going to advocate for this human disposition of the president to become a reality in the coming days,” the official said.
He recalled that the charge for license to older adults was implemented in the last administration led by Danilo Medina and will be corrected by the head of state.
What does the law say?
Decree number 6-19 on the Driver’s License Regulation, of January 8, 2019, signed by former President Danilo Medina, states in its article 21, subsection a: «For categories 01, 02 and 05, the period of validity will be four (4) years until its owner reaches sixty-five (65) years of age. Starting at sixty-five (65) years of age, the validity will be two (2) years.
Section b of said regulation states: «For categories 03 and 04, the period of validity will be three (3) years until the owner reaches sixty-five (65) years of age. From sixty-five (65) years of age, the validity will be one (1) year.
