Former officials are chained in the Ombudsman’s Office

Former officials are chained in the Ombudsman's Office

Some four women chained themselves in front of the Ombudsman’s Office. They demand unjustified dismissals from the Ombudsman, Miguel Godoy, who is accused of mistreatment and labor persecution.

Bibiana Bobeda, one of the protesters, was notified on the first business day of January that she was not going to continue in the institution, after 12 years of service.

“According to the resolution of the Ombudsman, I was removed because Godoy lost confidence in my work,” she said.

The demonstrators ask Miguel Godoy to appear before them to talk and find a solution. The other three affected are Shirley Cantero, Gissell Rivas and María Magdalena Barrios. Cantero and Barrios are 19 years old, while Rivas is 12.

“We are going to continue, we are even going to tighten the measures if he does not show up. We want you to revoke the resolutions that disassociate us. She was the head of the Public Services department,” she reported.

He pointed out that since Godoy took office in 2016, there have been more than 40 former officials dismissed without summaries.

“They invent anything to remove them, since labor lawsuits are very expensive and take between 4 to 5 years, but since October they hired more than 50 people for political quotation,” he denounced.

Finally, he said that Godoy is an arrogant person and that he almost never shows up at the Ombudsman’s Office. In addition, he accuses him of using officials to harass other workers who do not enjoy Godoy’s trust.

“We had a very bad time in the pandemic in 2020. Every day with the fear that it will take you out, just as they took us out now. He himself presented the resignations to the Ministry of Labor”, he commented.

The affected women did not participate in charity events in support of Godoy such as raffles, poladas, hamburgers and parties. If one does not participate, it means for Godoy that one does not directly support him.

BACKGROUND
Godoy has been involved in several incidents since he was elected to the position in 2016. One of the most important was the misogynistic comments made against Cecilia Pérez, then Minister of Justice. This, during a riot that occurred in the Tacumbú Prison in February 2021. In this regard, Godoy himself pointed out that he was only an outburst due to the death of seven inmates. “I apologized to her and she accepted them,” he replied at the time.

In October 2019, Vera Bordaberry, deputy defender, denounced a series of irregularities by Godoy and urged Parliament to impeach him.

Among the failures pointed out, it was reported that Godoy had made trips to international conferences with an official at the expense of millionaire travel expenses and, worst of all, that he himself had not participated in the conference. Thus, it was also denounced that the ombudsman would have used per diems that did not correspond to make trips to the interior of the country.

Undoubtedly, this background led to the fight between the two on June 17, in a public parking lot. The problem was that Vera Bordaberry took a parking space where she used to take Godoy. Given the lack of more places and the refusal of the first to leave the place, the second got out of his vehicle and physically beat him.
