Lionel Messi, Inter Miami forward, stated that at this moment he lives “day to day without thinking beyond” and that he will see how he feels before making the decision about his presence in the 2026 World Cup, aware that “in A lot of things happen in football.”
“I don’t know, the truth is that they asked me a lot of times, especially in Argentina. I hope to finish very well this year, to have a good preseason, which I didn’t have last year with all the trips we had. From there , see how I feel,” Messi said in an interview given to the ‘433’ portal and published this Thursday.
“I know that we are close, at the same time it is a long time and a lot of things happen in football. I don’t think, just live day to day without thinking beyond,” he added.
Messi, who scored 20 goals and had 16 assists in Inter Miami’s MLS regular season, turned 37 last June.
The Argentine stressed that he is having a great time in Miami and that he does not yet have a plan for his long-term future, although he ruled out deciding to be a coach.
“I know which coach I don’t think I would like to be. But I’m not sure what I can be either. I value what I experience every day much more. I only think about training, playing and having a good time,” he said.
He considered that his adaptation to the MLS, which he arrived in June 2023 after his time at Paris Saint Germain, has been very comfortable.
“I was changing my style of play a little, also because of my situation, because of my age. I was adapting a little to everything. I started to reinvent myself and adapt to the league, because it was new for me. I felt very comfortable from the beginning” , he stated.
“To build a club you have to win titles and be competitive. The club was coming off a difficult year in the MLS. Shortly after my arrival we won the Leagues Cup, the club’s first title. It was something special for all of us. And now we are excited to be able to compete in the playoffs and hopefully we can win the MLS Cup and win another title,” he added.
In the interview, Messi also talked about his extra-football passions.
“I like paddle tennis, basketball, tennis, but I like paddle tennis to practice,” said the Argentine, who met again in Miami with the Uruguayan Luis Suárez and the Spaniards Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
He also highlighted that he feels “grateful” for what he was able to achieve in his career and defined the 2022 World Cup victory as “the biggest dream” he had.
