Caged records creation of 247 thousand jobs in September

Formal job creation rose in September. According to data released by the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, 247,818 formal jobs were opened in the last month. Job creation rose 21.1% compared to the same month last year. In September 2023, 204,670 jobs had been created, in adjusted data, which considers declarations submitted late by employers. In relation to the months of September, the volume was the highest since 2022.

In the first nine months of the year, 1,981,557 vacancies were opened. This result is 24% higher than in the same period last year. The comparison considers data with adjustments, when the Ministry of Labor records declarations submitted late by employers and rectifies data from previous months.

The accumulated result is the highest since 2022, when 2,181,100 jobs were created from January to September. The change in the Caged methodology does not make comparisons with years prior to 2020 possible.

Sectors

In the division by field of activity, four of the five sectors surveyed created formal jobs in September. The statistics were led by services, with the opening of 128,354 jobs, followed by industry (processing, extraction and other types), with 59,827 more jobs. In third place comes trade, with the creation of 44,622 jobs.

The level of employment increased in construction, with the opening of 17,024 jobs. With the pressure to end the harvest of several products, agriculture was the only sector with a negative balance, eliminating 2,004 jobs last month.

Highlights

In services, job creation was driven by the segment of information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities, with the opening of 55,860 formal positions. The category of public administration, defense and social security, education, human health and social services opened 31,046 vacancies.

In industry, the positive highlight was the manufacturing industry, which hired 45,803 more workers than it fired. In second place was the water, sewage, waste management and decontamination segment, which opened 2,285 vacancies.

The Caged statistics presented from 2020 do not detail hiring and firings by trade segments. The previous historical series separated data from wholesale and retail trade.

Regions

All five Brazilian regions created formal jobs in September. The Southeast led in job openings, with 98,282 more positions, followed by the Northeast, with 77,175 positions. Next comes the South, with 38,140 positions. The North opened 15,609 jobs, and the Central-West created 15,362 formal jobs last month, having the lowest performance due to the end of the harvest.

In the division by Federation units, all registered a positive balance. The highlights in job creation were São Paulo (+57,067 jobs), Rio de Janeiro (+19,740) and Pernambuco (+17,851). The lowest numbers of job openings were recorded in Rondônia (+599), Roraima (+729) and Acre (+955).
