A bill to increase the number of parliamentarians to 250 has been presented by the congressman for Popular Action, Luis Aragón, and is pending debate in the Constitution Commission of the Congress of the Republic.
Currently, as is known, there are 130 parliamentarians that make up a single chamber.
In the 2026 elections, under a series of constitutional reforms, the Legislative Branch will have a total of 190 members, 60 of them senators and 130 deputies.

Congressman Aragón’s initiative postulates an increase in the number of legislators by 2031, alleging that there is a crisis of representation.
This position was endorsed by the former head of the Constitution Commission and current vice president of Congress, Patricia Juárez, who pointed out that the population is currently underrepresented in Congress. “Before we were 180 deputies,” he recalled.
In this context, however, it should be noted that according to the latest Ipsos survey carried out nationally in urban and rural areas, Congress’ disapproval now reaches 88%; Only 6% of citizens support it.
