Ministers Pardo Rebolledo and Ortiz Mena resign from the Supreme Court

It is expected that other ministers will also present their resignation in the coming days, as they have until October 30 to do so.

In that case are the ministers Juan Luis González Alcántara, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Jorge Pardo, Javier Laynez, Margarita Ríos and the president herself Norma Piña. While Minister Luis María Aguilar ends his term in November.

According to the Judicial Reform, those who do not resign have automatic passage as candidates in the elections of the new ministers, and in that sense there are the ministers Yasmín Esquivel, Lenia Batres and Loretta Ortiz, considered close to Morena.

The second minister who resigned from his position and in turn declined to participate in the elections in June 2025 was Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo.

“Given such a dilemma, I inform you that I decline to participate in the extraordinary electoral process 2024-2025 for the appointment of ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (…) I present with this date, for all constitutional and legal purposes appropriate, my resignation from the position I hold,” he mentioned in the letter he sent to the Senate.

Furthermore, he emphasized that this resignation does not imply an act of surrender or compliance on his part, since he said that during 40 years of his judicial career he maintained a “clean record” and performed his duties with independence, honesty, impartiality, objectivity, excellence and dedication that are necessary in jurisdictional activity.

He also “strongly” rejected the insults to which he has been subjected as a member of the SCJN. “I maintain the relevance that the Judicial Career has in the Delivery of Justice and I present my resignation not as an act of convenience but of personal consistency,” he said.
