President of France asked Putin "immediate end" offensive in Ukraine

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, communicated by telephone this Thursday with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to “demand the immediate end” of the Russian offensive against Ukraine, announced the French presidency.

“After speaking with the president of Ukraine, and in coordination with him, [Macron] called Vladimir Putin to demand an immediate end to military operations,” the French president’s office reported.

In that dialogue, Macron reminded Putin that Russia was now exposed to “massive sanctions” by the European Union (EU).

On the day, Macron stated that the Russian military offensive against Ukraine constituted “a turning point in the history of Europe” and called for the adoption of sanctions “at the height of aggression.”

Macron participates in Brussels in an emergency summit of the 27 EU leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

The 27 leaders agreed to adopt sanctions with “massive and severe” consequences for Russia, with measures that will affect the financial, energy and transport sectors.
