Havana: Thieves murder a babalawo in his own home

SANTIAGO DE CUBA. – In the early hours of this Saturday, José Ángel Regüeiferos Fontanal was murdered, near the Esquina de Tejas, on the Calzada del Cerro, Havana. The 59-year-old man was trying to prevent intruders from robbing his home, when he was attacked and stabbed to death by the assailants. His body was discovered on Sunday morning, as confirmed by sources close to CubaNet.

“They broke into his house to rob him, he saw the men and blew them up. In response, these people stabbed him and killed him. Then they took almost everything from the house and left it covered with a sheet under the table,” said Ibis Zamora, a relative of the victim.

Regüeiferos Fontanal is a native of the municipality Songo La Mayain Santiago de Cuba. Although he had lived in the capital for years, where he worked as a babalawo.

So far, it is unknown the actual amount of the stolen goods and whether the murderers were arrested or remain at large. The victim’s relatives traveled to the capital to take care of the funeral and collaborate with the police investigation.

“Apparently they went in to steal money that the man had from some sales,” said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisals. His young son and his wife were present and were murdered.

The other victim and his teenage son responded to the call of the former and were also killed.

The same day, the official Cuban press reported the crime. “The deceased includes Richard Dariel Núñez, under four years of age. The rest of the victims of the crime are named Lester Rivadeneira Rodríguez, a 17-year-old boy; Yamila Reyes Tamayo, 29; and Raysa Rodríguez Pérez de Corcho, 50”, is read in a brief note from the local official newspaper Invader.
