Smugglers use trail routes to evade controls on the border between Peru and Bolivia

Vehicles containing clothing, fuel, cigarettes and Bolivian gas have intensified their passage across the border towards Peru, evading Police and Customs controls, according to Cuarto Poder.

The Sunday newspaper revealed that smugglers are using new routes, gaugeto avoid going through immigration controls. The same authority that is in charge of guarding the Peruvian border seems inactive in the presence of illegal merchandise.

The merchants themselves give tactics to get products across the border without being detected. For example, gas cylinders are passed as luggage and carried by boat to cross the Lake Titicaca.

In the Tilali sector and in other points north of Lake Titicaca, smuggling has intensified. Fairs are held several days a week, with illegal products.

Sector specialists have pointed out that smuggling leaves losses of 600 million dollars for the country every year.
