United Nations – Haitians who are forcibly deported face threats to their lives and new displacements, the UN said this Thursday, calling on the responsible countries, referring to the Dominican Republic, for “a humanitarian approach for those who need protection.”
In a statement to EFE from the office of the secretary general’s spokesperson, the UN recognizes that “the sovereignty of the state and national security” of the Dominican Republic must be respected, which has undertaken unprecedented mass deportations this month of October, but launches several warnings about it.
Since October 1 and until last Tuesday, the Dominican Republic has deported 27,352 Haitian citizens, while another 8,721 have returned to their country voluntarily in the same period.
At the beginning of October, the Dominican Government ordered the immediate execution of an operation with the objective of repatriating up to 10,000 migrants per week, which almost exclusively affects Haitians.
The UN reminds that, with the situation in Haiti being “desperate”, “humanitarian treatment must be reserved for all those who need protection”, and forced deportations can “endanger the lives of Haitian women, children and men”.
For this reason, it offers to assist the Dominican Government, through the entire system of UN agencies, “to guarantee accessible protection measures to whoever needs them.”
