One of the works aimed at the problem of suicides
As planned, fifty stands were installed in the wide corridors of the Monseñor Lasagna Institute within the framework of the “Education in Movement” Project.
Among the many works presented, all of them very interesting, THE DIARY PROFESSIONAL selected one that has to do with people’s mental health, more specifically with the increasingly worrying problem of suicide.
“We were working on a project throughout the year for the Economic Studies Subject and the topic we chose to address was suicides in Uruguay because we believe that it is something very important and that is not talked about too much because it is type a taboo that exists in society” the student contextualized Emilia Silva.
“We address this issue because it is a very big problem in the country. “We have one of the highest suicide rates on the continent” he added. Emilia Denis
“There is not much information at the population level. There should be more talks in Uruguay and in Melo particularly, here at the School there should also be more conferences on the matter” they counted Sofía Leites and Fiama Milene.
“We chose this because it is a social issue that affects us all as a country and as people” They commented within the framework of the Educational Fair that took place at the educational center.
“We also conducted surveys with the psychologist and the high school students and we realized that a significant number of our classmates were uninformed on the subject. For example, when we asked them if they knew the causes or risk factors, they answered no. Very few answered yes” they expressed to THE DIARY PROFESSIONAL.
WE ARE IN TROUBLE
This topic was selected as the center of the investigation due to the high suicide indicators that Uruguay has. “They are the highest on the continent. Since 2020 there has been an average and since 2020 the figure has been growing. “We are in trouble.” they warned.
“We also investigated warning signs in adults and young people” they pointed out. “In the adult world we talk about suicide plans. There are signs such as sleeping a lot or little, eating a lot or very little. “It is something that is closely linked to mental problems, but also to social and economic factors.” they added.
IT IS MULTICAUSAL
It was based on the hypothesis that suicide originates from mental problems that have not been properly treated. “While this is partly the case, it is also due to economic, social and biological factors, among others. It is not only for one cause, but it is multi-causal.” remarked the students of the Monseñor Lasagna Institute.
“In Uruguay this issue has to be made more visible” they exhorted. “We have to stop stigmatizing it because it is something that can happen to anyone. If a person tells us that they feel bad, we should never minimize it. If he is telling it, it is because he does not want to reach that last stage, which is suicide. The person is warning what may happen. Yes we can help others much better. “We could prevent suicide from happening.” highlighted the members of this group of students who carried out research on mental health, specifically suicide.
